Courage in architecture: designing darkness

To understand light you first need darkness. Why we draw shadow first in every KARA project.

Daylight pouring through a narrow slit in a pitch-black concrete wall

If you light a space evenly from everywhere, light becomes invisible. What makes light visible is the darkness around it.

Shadow first

We start our projects with a shadow study: where will the sun pass through the year, which surface stays in shade, how will light enter from a single place?

Few but right openings

Instead of many windows, few openings in the right places. In Dark Museum no gallery has a window; light falls only on the work.

Dark materials

Dark concrete, charred timber and blackened steel absorb and calm light. Within them a single line of light is as powerful as a chandelier.
